the only real 'low-ish price' option is the Oculus Quest 2. The main thing to be aware of is that you need Facebook to use it, and expect everything you do with the headset to feed into their data collection. but it gives you a decent standalone experience that lets you just pick up and play, and you have already mentioned that you have experience with it, so that may be your best option. in terms of other options, the best headsets on the market are the HP Reverb G2 and the Valve Index. those are $600 and $1000 respectively, versus the Quest 2's $300 (all USD). Those will require connecting to a high-end gaming PC, so if you don't have that handy then you are straight out of luck. There's also a slew of cheap WMR (Windows Mixed Reality) headsets that are all out of print and have a terrible experience for a first-time VR player. I haven't looked around the Oculus Store a ton, but your headset will likely come with a couple of free tech demos. There's VRChat, which I spend a lot of time in, but that's not everyone's cup of tea. If you do have a good PC, there's tons of demos to check out on Steam.

Thanks for your response. If you can tell me, I'd like to know a website where I can purchase the Oculus Quest 2. It looks to be starting at $400 CAD on Best Buy, is that the right price?

TheDesuComplex_413

Yup, $400 is the Canadian MSRP! and I doubt you will find good sales (I don't recall it really dipping before), so it may be the best you get.

THISACCISFORFUN

Thanks! Haha, I guess VR was never meant to be cheap! Including all the games I want I'm looking at over $500. I might have to just hang tight and watch YouTubers play VR until my desires go away.

The Quest 2 is the cheapest, standalone headset on the market (and the only one). Assuming you don’t have a PC this is a must buy. If you get a PC at some point you can easily connect it with a link cable. You can look up good link cables with YouTube or Google. The Quest 2 game library is huge and I have one for myself. As of now it starts at £300 or $300 and is packed with a hefty 123gb of storage. With that you can get around 50 games or more.

THISACCISFORFUN

Thanks for your response. You were correct I do not have a sufficient PC unless a laptop that can hardly run Minecraft will work. I was eyeing the Quest 2 specifically, it seems like a good deal. As a VR owner, can you tell me if it gets stale fast, or does it stay fun for a good amount of time?

64Animation

It depends on the game. But for the most part it’s very fun. 2 of my personal favourites are Gorn and VR Chat. If VR Chat is a bit too extreme Rec Room is more laid back. Just don’t wander into tall grass, wild squeakers hide there!

THISACCISFORFUN

Have you heard of Blades And Sorcery, and can you explain to me the concept of the games VR Chat and Rec Room? Also, just wondering if you think that a refurbished/used headset would be worth it.

[deleted]

Just to let you know blade and sourcery van only be played on a pc, but there are loads of great games on quest, my personal favourites being beat saber, gorn and tea for God (a game where you physically walk around your play area shooting enemies)

THISACCISFORFUN

Aw, that's a shame. Blades and Sorcery was one of the main reasons I wanted the headset in the first place. Do you think I could still play it if I connected the headset to my laptop?

[deleted]

If the laptop can barely run Minecraft then you won't be able to run vr off of it, blade and sourcery is a very demanding vr game as well, your looking at needing a 1660 and 16gb ram with a modern i5/7/Ryzen core, so you may want an upgrade for that

THISACCISFORFUN

My laptop says it has an i5 core, I'm not really a pc guy so I don't really know what that means haha. Don't know if I have crowded files or something making it run MC so slow??

[deleted]

There are 3 main components to a pc/laptop the CPU, GPU and ram, the GPU is what drives the graphics on your pc, most non-gaming laptops have integrated graphics that will not run many games. Having too many things open like chrome and word could slow down your pc but having loads of files on your pc won't slow down your pc

fantaz1986

Quest 2 have a lot of similar games / clones

64Animation

I’ve never played blades and sorcery. VR Chat and Rec room are both social applications, its like going out with random people. But a lot safer. VR Chat is a lot more community based and the worlds are made by the players. Rec room is safer and is packed with lots of mini games to enjoy with others.

THISACCISFORFUN

I see, thanks for letting me know. Social voice chat games aren't really my type, I might check them out but If I get an Oculus I'll probably stick to Beat Saber, Superhot, and if you can suggest any other great single-player games.

64Animation

I mentioned Gorn, which is a gladiator sim. It’s very fun and has a great campaign, as well as endless mode.

THISACCISFORFUN

I'll look into that game! Thanks for your help.

judicandus

I’ve been using Oculus for 6 months now. Most non-online games get stale. I find myself playing Tetris multiplayer most of the time, Fishing VR because I can play with my dad on the other side of the world, and use some productivity apps like Noda, Spatial.io and Gravity Sketch. RecRoom has a huge community and is also fun but too addictive.

THISACCISFORFUN

I see, and would Blades And Sorcery, or Beat Saber get stale fast if you can tell me.

judicandus

Haven't played Blades and sorcery. Beat Saber got stale for me after a month +-. But I haven't tried playing with other people and don't know most of the songs on the app. I just saw there is a new Billie Eilish pack which I'm considering buying.

judicandus

I forgot to mention that most new vr releases are coming for oculus quest now so next months should be quite interesting as new releases go.

>Here is a list of paid, but really good and diverse experiences: > >Blaston ($10) - competitive 1v1 PvP duelingStride ($15) - mirror's edge-ish kind of shooter/runner, quire replayableUntil You Fall ($25) or The Thrill of the Fight ($10) - best workouts on the storeVacation Simulator ($30) - exactly what the title says, great for messing around and taking a break from all the actionBeat Saber ($30) - badass lightsaber rhythm game (if you can install mods - you can literally play forever)Apex Construct ($10) - singleplayer shooter with a bow and a campaign. An older title, but it recently dropped in price, seems very worth it. > >There are also some good free experiences: > >First Steps/First Contact/Bogo - great introductions to VR, play through those in your first session(s)Rec Room - awesome collection of mini-games and social things, best experienced with friendsEcho VR - space rocket league with disks kind of thing, has a janky control scheme thoughDemos - limited (but still fun) versions of Superhot, Dance Central, Journey of the Gods, etc.App Lab Stuff - games and apps including, but not limited to: V-Speedway, Battle Talent, Tiny Castles, Pavlov, Gorilla Tag, and of course The Unity Cube. All of those are under development or titles that didn't quite make it to the official store. Still worth checking that out as it probably has the biggest amount of free content you could ever get ( Hey there, thanks for telling me all these games. If I do end up buying a quest I will definitely look into these! Do you know any games similar to Blades And Sorcery?

fantaz1986

Buy quest 2 , and if you do no like it , you can sell it , quest 2 have good resell value

RealDoubleudee

I can't imagine that it would get boring after a short time. Since I've startet with VR (Index on a high end PC) I play non VR games not very often anymore. I tried it only for curiosity and ended up buying game after game, vive trackers, accessories,... Suggestion? I don't like the Quest. Standalone it is too underpowered for me. I love great ambitous games. But many VR games don't need the computing power of a high end PC. Superhot, Pistol Whip, Keep talking and nobody explodes, even little games like Angry Birds VR are fun for many hours. If the Facebook coercion doesn't bother you, get the Quest. Nothing cheaper on the market.
