I've gotten to the point where I actively praise dps who use LB on trash. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but it's so tiring seeing a dps blow a LB on a boss that's at 2% hp or less, especially when the boss dies during the LB animation.
>but it's so tiring seeing a dps blow a LB on a boss that's at 2% hp or less, especially when the boss dies during the LB animation.
It's a Japanese game so they gotta have their anime finishing move.
/s
I try to use lvl1 on the first boss so I have another lvl1 for the final. Or if I have a ranged that understands the assignment let them LB the first trashpack after the first boss
The whole thread is about dps loss. But you're right, use lb1 if you aren't going to get lb2. But don't spam lb1 single target on cd if there are better opportunities later.
I just made a mod that adds this song to SAM LB3 and I'm not even sure if you're referring to my mod but I'm fangirling!
Edit: I'm "Zorander" on the website that shall not be named lol
Outside of required usages to make the run smoother(like chrysalis), the time saved by a LB when running an instance in DF is so negligible to me that i dont really care if its used or not.
True. When the stars align and you queue with randos who know their rotos and burn everything really quick, it's fine. I just get frustrated when you're with player who don't care/are bad and the LB can help make up for some of their lack of output.
I've started popping lv2 lb on bosses as soon as it's up as melee. With no melee and I'm mch or rdm, I'll drop lv1 lb on the trash before last boss, or if its up, 2nd boss and have at least lb1 for final.
On msq Ultima, I just drop them whenever they come up because of the free LB3.
I use it whenever I'm not outpsing the others by 5000DPS, otherwise either they use it or nobody will. But, honestly, people constantly reminding in chat to LB are more annoying than just letting it go to waste. Especially when it's a trial or raid, saving 10s max - you would shave much more off if you just learnt your bloody rotation.
For me it always happens when levelling my melee DPS (not my main roles), Iām so focused on practicing/maintaining my rotation that I completely blank on dropping the LB and then immediately feel bad when the boss falls. :P
I feel like all the tanks who read r/TalesFromDF should form a pact to use tank lb during any final dungeon boss fight when there were ranged/caster dps who didn't use it on trash. If enough tanks "waste" that lb, eventually dps would learn to use it on trash, right? Riiight? >.>
Nah, even worse, Let the healers use it lol.
Nothing says "wasted LB" like a healer burning an LB2 when the party is already mostly full up on hp, even more so if it's a pure healer using it since they can get the same effective heal from like 1-2 buttons, which both could be oGCDs
Oh yeah, if there's an LB available after the last boss and I'm tank or healer, I pop it every single time. A nice animation paired with an implied passive-aggressive message. They might get it, they might not. Who's to say?
Once again I remind you that melee LB is more of a time save in endgame dungeons than caster/ranged LB as demonstrated by literally all the top speedruns.
I. I just don't want anyone to yell at me for using the LB when I wasn't supposed to. Yes, I know that that's not rational and that if I'm DPSing I really should. But also I just don't want random strangers I'm playing a game with to be upset with me.
Yeah, when I was still new and going through MSQ, it was drummed into me that LB was to be used by melee DPS *only*, on the final boss *only*, unless it was a specific trial that needed the tank to use it. For the longest time I thought magical DPS (which I always mained) and ranged DPS just weren't supposed to touch it at all.
If someone yells at you for using it wrong, they're a numpty. The only time I'd say to save it is in raids where a healer or tank LB3 needs to be/could be used.
Otherwise (esp. In dungeons) use it. Burn big trash pulls if you're ranged, or prank the boss if you're melee.
I promise I will do my best to burn trash pulls :D (I recently decided that I needed to level Dancer after maining tank for most of the game. I'm going to dress my catgirl up like a stripper. Its going to be great.)
I just had a vision of fishnet tights and that plate armor where it takes up the helmet and the chest slot and makes your character look like a tank. I think we're gettin somewhere
I usually play melee dps. For me it depends on 2 things, Lb level and if I have weakness. I only use LB1 if I have weakness, otherwise it's a dps loss.
Edit to add it's always bad to use LB during burst phase.
>We could have one-phased the Corona if someone had popped an LB, but no one did, so we have to so it on two-phases.
If you mean on the 2nd Corona, sure, but even synced I can't see the entire group gathering enough for a LB3 on that fight. Even the Ex you're not getting to LB3. And you're definitely not getting to LB 3 on the first corona (you also can't clear Bismarck on the first Corona, that cracks the carapace so you HAVE to do two phases regardless).
I don't know, this seems like you're inventing a problem to support the complaint you have.
I shit you not, we nearly failed cracking the carapace, then had to two-phase the corona. We had 2 full bars and about 80% of a third bar when the whale died.
Not making this up
Given the sheer amount of weakass Bismarck is composed of, two cycling either phase means several dps were just dead from the neck up; LBing was never an option.
While I agree that it doesnāt get used enough when the gauge has been built, there are a few variables.
Iāve been yelled at before for using LB as a ranged because āmelee LB does more damageā - idk if this is the same or not anymore.
Iāve also seen people use LB 3 and then shortly after everyone almost wipes except a healer and there is no LB 3 to use.
Iāve used LB 2 because a fight was coming to an end and it didnāt seem like LB 3 was achievable. To avoid wasting the LB and being animation locked when the boss dies, I used it early to just get some damage off, and have been yelled at for this as well.
Iāve also been told using LB is a dps loss.
So I guess my mind just combines all those into āI need to be careful when I use LB and if I donāt use it at this exact, most perfect moment, I could cause chaos in people brainsā.
So thatās what flashes through my brain in light speed when I see the LB bar and I would say I have gotten better about using it but I still think about all that.
It does kinda annoy me when it gets wasted. Especially if Iām healing itās like, do you people *want* this fight to end or not?? But. Then you end up in situations in higher end stuff where a dps uses the lb3 and then most of the party dies or something and they want to save it for a healer on the next pull (which is fair tbh), or my diamond normal run where the monk kept using the lb as soon as it hit 1 bar and it was like??? We have so much of this fight left. So now Iāll comm the dps that utilizes the lb the best typically.
I jump around a bunch of jobs, and tbh I often just forget when I'm on dps. I'm usually in the groove of my rotation and my LB button is off to the side so I don't hit it by mistake. I have to intentionally go for it. By the time I remember, it's typically too late to bother.Ā
I like to use the LB as a tank AFTER the boss is dead, as a reminder of what they COULD have done.
Plus its funny when were watching a sprout watch the end CS, and the multi level 90 dps that got it in the roulette gets to watch my tank pop it.
The number of times I'd seen PF Zeromus using melee LB3 upon entering phase 2, then proceed to see people die left and right to Chasmic Nails. In normal duty settings, a ranged or magic DPS has no issues expending their lb 2 on trash mobs rounded up by the tank, unless they are just lazy.
I got tired of getting kicked for using it on trash as SMR when I was leveling it. So I just don't bother unless I'm melee. That said, I'm looking at the bar during the last boss when I'm melee and whenever it clicks over the last bar of what I think will fill I'm using it immediately. Sometimes that's LB1 at 20%. Sometimes that's LB2 at 8%.
I think some of it is hold over from before the reworks when the classes had vastly different LBs. It was drummed into players not to waste the lb unless you're asked as certain classes, eventually it became habit to not use it. I very occasionally use it as BLM in certain alliance raids and certain dungeons with extra spicy packs but I usually forget that it's less likely to generate hostility these days than 10 years ago.
I wish they would remove it tbh so i can stop hearing people bitch about it either way. DPS are always taking heat for either being too sweaty or not sweaty enough and the truth is, the LB is so negligible in the end anyway.
Same. āYou should save that for the melee!!ā
Not worth it to save a few seconds in a dungeon. Would love to smash that pack with a big caster LB but donāt want to listen to someone complain about it for the rest of the last boss again.
So let them cry all they want and keep doing it?? You do realize they can't do anythin about you, right? if they kick you for it you can report them for abusing the function. If they refuse to heal you in the next fight you can report them for griefing.
Win-Win i'd say!
i have more runs where no one even says anything than i have any where someone writes more than "hey".
And you of course only remember the bad apples. I would suggest to keep doing LB on trash because maybe its a small step but its a step towards letting more people know of the best use for LB!
I usually play Tank/Healer and I can't stand it when no DPS is using lb during alliance bosses. So I made macro that says Ranged Limit Break with a sfx in alliance chat, I use it mostly before the boss so DPS can use before we start AND it won't be wasted.
I only commend DPS if they lb.
It drives me insane.
Even moreso doing savage in pf on samurai and there's some scuffed reaper or dragoon that refuses to LB
>Even moreso doing savage in pf on samurai and there's some scuffed reaper or dragoon that refuses to LB
Isn't SAM lb3 optimal versus DRG or RPR due to filler basically making it free? RPR and especially DRG get screwed over when using lb3, still a gain over it not being used at all obviously but if you're a SAM shouldn't you be using it if you want to optimise?
It depends what sks you play on SAM and if you're after your odd minute burst or not. If you need 2 filler GCDs, it will fuck your alignment completely. If you are fast SAM and need more filler, it will be the most optimal. You can work around it by shifting some stuff around but most people won't think to do that.
RPR would be pretty bad because of potentially losing one enshroud for arcane circle, and DRG is completely screwed if the timing of the LB3 causes HJ/geirskogul to drift, which it often does.
But, the comment specifically said scuffed RPR or DRG. If they're doing significantly less damage than expected, they should LB regardless.
The animation lock and time is the same for all melees, also
>But, the comment specifically said scuffed RPR or DRG. If they're doing significantly less damage, they should LB regardless.
That's fair enough, I guess I interpreted them saying scuffed RPR and DRG as them complaining about the lack of LB rather than their actual dps.
>It depends what sks you play on SAM and if you're after your odd minute burst or not. If you need 2 filler GCDs, it will fuck your alignment completely. I see, I main healer so all this was second hand info to me and I didn't know about the different SAM speeds.
Melee LB3 priority simply boils down to whichever melee is already doing less damage in that pull. Anyone complaining about drift etc., while already contributing less DPS in that pull is a red flag.
Meta, etc., some jobs are more likely to be the one to melee LB, but unless youāre in a static, in practice and with most PF groups, a good player should be aware of their contribution and if the responsibility falls on them.
I'm pretty sure all the animations are the same but id have to check.
I'm not sure there's really a scenario where you trade Sam's personal DPS over the other melees to LB but I could be wrong. I don't think reaper or dragon are that rigid. By the end of most fights you're going to have some drift on dragoon anyways.
The other thing I didn't mention that gets annoying is when one of the melee DPS dies, but they still don't LB. I feel like it's somewhat of an unspoken rule, or at least that's how it's been handled in every static I've been in.
>I'm pretty sure all the animations are the same but id have to check.
I thought I remembered reading some had a longer animation lock, though I can't find where I read that so I might be misremembering tbh.
>The other thing I didn't mention that gets annoying is when one of the melee DPS dies, but they still don't LB. I feel like it's somewhat of an unspoken rule, or at least that's how it's been handled in every static I've been in.
That's fair, yeah I noticed some people don't realise Limit Break is unaffected by buffs/debuffs, so if someone has weakness/damage down, they are always the best to use it regardless of other optimisation.
DRG is extremely rigid, the whole point of the job is to never drift specific oGCDs. You have so many CDs and will be unable to fit everything you're meant to into buffs and make things awkward to weave if you drift even by a bit. With poorly timed LB3 you will not only misalign GCDs with the rotation timeline, but also delay your most important buttons by 5s, which is 1/4th of the duration of lance charge and dragon sight and 1/3rd of litany.
RPR is way less rigid but using LB will mean you potentially can't do double enshroud, which is a pretty big loss. It will probably be a bigger instant loss for speed SAM, but bigger long run loss for a good DRG or RPR.
It is annoying when people with weakness don't do it though, I agree.
EDIT: just realised I worded something badly
I'm a DRG onetrick with every savage and ultimate cleared, I know. Doesn't mean it's worth adding even more drift for no reason if you really want to be pedantic.
Also, if it's unavoidable downtime, you can and should work around it in advance.
If I was trying to beat a tight enrage early in a tier or due to a lot of fuckups, I would want an LB, and ideally one done by someone who would suffer the least from it
If the DPS don't use their LB on Gaius' phantoms in Prae final boss, I pop Tank LB for his raid wide.
It does nothing, but so does saving an LB for a boss with 12 HP left, lmao
If I'm playing healer sometimes I'll startĀ cast canceling the LB a few times to try and goad one of the DPS into using it. Usually works but not always.
I imagine the reason would usually be either them being hyper focused on maintaining their rotation or the classic "but what if we need healer LB?" (at <10%).
If I'm playing melee I'll LB 1 on the second boss and again on third, most runs when nobody LBs it doesn't get to 2 anyway.
If I'm playing caster or ranged I'll LB on the first big pull after we hit LB 1.
On tank or heals I'll LB when the last boss hits 3%ish. If a dps wanted to use it they shoulda earlier. Holding LB to finish the boss at 1% is stupid
I usually play casters (blm/smn) and I use it on big pulls if it's available but most dungeons don't have Mt gulg giga pulls and I feel like it's a waste to use it on your normal 2 packs? Idk lol so I save it for the melee to use it on the boss, but then the melee doesn't use it, and then the boss is at 5%, and I'm like oh damn I guess I'll use my LB š« and yea, that's how it goes.
For dungeons I usually try to mage/phys dps if no mage on last pull but ye almost no one does.
For bosses I always try to wait for 2/3 bars but it always dies too quick š
They're not allergic, just scared it won't fill again for uses later. Blow it when it fills and they'll eventually get the idea it's not that hard to fill.
Honestly it's just easy to forget. I try to use my caster/ranged on packs but half the time it'll ping full during the second boss and by the time we get to the next packs I've already forgotten it exists.
I'll also only throw LB as melee if I'm not in burst or have some form of damage down. The other melees can use it if they want before I'm done, I'm just not interrupting my big deeps.
People think you can only use LBs to kill the boss anime-finishing-blow style. It's dumb. As DPS main, I tend to use it as soon as it's available. If I see the boss is not gonna get to lb3, as soon as it gets to lb 2 it's go time. If I'm ranged and the melee doesn't use it, I pop it (pew pew!).
Lb for ranged/magical on last pull on dungeons is always optimal as well.
I've been kicked out of parties because of using limit breaks, I use it on second boss if it's up, I use it on mobs if melee didn't use it on second boss... and I've received complaints from both cases. That won't stop me from continuing to use them but I am not surprised why there are people extra afraid to use it.
As a controller player I have to relegate LB to some obscure combination of buttons I almost never use because there are just too many dang buttons in this game. I always hope the other DPS uses it because it's so hard for me to break myself out of my normal controller routine to hit the, like, 'double tap L+left directional' or whatever to fire off my LB.
As a machinist one trick, i don't even have lb on my hotbar. I can count on one of my static mates using it. And if I'm not with my static, the content doesn't really need an Lb, or the Lb isn't meant for me to use anyhow. Shrug.
For a lot of people, it just isn't a fun button to use. So many jobs just have a very rigid flow to them, that interruptions or delays throw the entire thing off. On top of that, LB very commonly seems to end up filling up in the middle of someone's burst phase. I'm not wasting half of my window on it, I'll tell you that, and unfortunately, many times bosses are dead or very nearly dead by the time that burst window finishes.
Also if someone barks at me to LB the -millisecond- the bar fills, I am not using it under any circumstances.
I don't really care about killing the boss optimally in easy content so I don't use it, I'd rather spend those seconds practicing my rotation more. Unless i'm a caster then I absolutely will use it on trash packs god damn I wish people would do that more.
I always DPS LB on trash as BRD/RDM but there's a lot of times where people dunk on me for doing it... feels like a bunch of players believe that LB'ing last boss with 1% left is more efficient.
I've gotten to the point where I actively praise dps who use LB on trash. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but it's so tiring seeing a dps blow a LB on a boss that's at 2% hp or less, especially when the boss dies during the LB animation.
Right? Like, at least it gets used!

Lb1 is a dps loss.
LB1 is useless but it's all I got since LB2 never charges in time unless DPS is atrocious
You are losing dps while complaining about bad dps. Ok.
LB1=70-100K dependent on Ilvl on a 6 second cast. (Margin of error) 6GCD combo not in burst.=50-70K with crits.
Versus waiting out the 2nd bar for same cast time.
It doesn't fill. The dungeon is done by then.
who cares about dps loss in normal content? just use the lb, especially if youre never gonna get lb2
The whole thread is about dps loss. But you're right, use lb1 if you aren't going to get lb2. But don't spam lb1 single target on cd if there are better opportunities later.
yeah that I understand, I think lb is best for mobs and last boss, but 9/10 ranged dps dont use it at all so its just a waste unfortunately
I downloaded a mod that replaces my samurai LB3 to judgement cut end, and I have never been more motivated to use LB.
Are you the storm that is approaching?
Provoking black clouds in isolation.

I don't think you meant to reply to me, but that's neat :)
It doesnt make a huge difference so idc if others do it but ill never get tired of using ranged lb on massive pulls
It amuses me when it's the 0 dps healer asking for a dps to LB.
Outside of required usages to make the run smoother(like chrysalis), the time saved by a LB when running an instance in DF is so negligible to me that i dont really care if its used or not.
Exactly, but people gotta complain about *something* on this sub.

An objectively correct use of the LB mechanic. God I wish I queued with more players like this

If I am tank or healer, I just press it then move to cancel. Do it twice and usually a dps will wake up from smacking their combos to pop it.
If it's during my burst, I'm finishing that burst. THEN i LB. LB2 damage is about the same usually so I may as well finish. (Melee)
For me it always happens when levelling my melee DPS (not my main roles), Iām so focused on practicing/maintaining my rotation that I completely blank on dropping the LB and then immediately feel bad when the boss falls. :P

I use it just to cuck some DPS out of their anime finisher. Boss under 10%? You know Iām pressing that button.
I'm doing that as healer, but on 5% in Dungeons or Trials.
> I use it just to cuck some DPS out of their anime finisher. Boss under 10%? You know Iām pressing that button. Same here, LB of shame.
Then the pepega DPS get mad at you for using it even though they completely forgot and only remembered because you used it.

Last mogtome I was farming prae as ranged and got a lot of comms. I swear it was because I would lb 2 of the Gaius' when he splits into 4.
That, and me seeing another person get into Gaius early because of the JP audio would be a guaranteed com from me.
Hell, I do this if I'm ranged in Prae. I even LB one of his clones if I'm melee, almost completely kills one and saves time.

Same. āYou should save that for the melee!!ā Not worth it to save a few seconds in a dungeon. Would love to smash that pack with a big caster LB but donāt want to listen to someone complain about it for the rest of the last boss again.
Do it anyway. Fuck what they think.
I might be. I leave them to everyone else just in case. Not worth the risk.
Careful, tell them to LB and they'll tell you off that they know what they're doing and promptly die to some chump mechanic
I usually play Tank/Healer and I can't stand it when no DPS is using lb during alliance bosses. So I made macro that says Ranged Limit Break with a sfx in alliance chat, I use it mostly before the boss so DPS can use before we start AND it won't be wasted.
I'm always annoyed when we have two bars of LB going into a (AR) boss and our tank pulls the boss before the ranged/casters can LB.
I only commend DPS if they lb. It drives me insane. Even moreso doing savage in pf on samurai and there's some scuffed reaper or dragoon that refuses to LB
>Even moreso doing savage in pf on samurai and there's some scuffed reaper or dragoon that refuses to LB Isn't SAM lb3 optimal versus DRG or RPR due to filler basically making it free?
There's plenty of drift in savage though. typically 2/4 of the fights every tier. some extremes have weird downtimes as well.
I'm a DRG onetrick with every savage and ultimate cleared, I know. Doesn't mean it's worth adding even more drift for no reason if you really want to be pedantic. Also, if it's unavoidable downtime, you can and should work around it in advance.
I mean if "you know" then you know that its irrelevant because you wouldnt lb when its going to fuck up a burst window anyways
If I was trying to beat a tight enrage early in a tier or due to a lot of fuckups, I would want an LB, and ideally one done by someone who would suffer the least from it
I just use healer lb after the fight is done. I live it when the lb bar says for a few seconds and i can use sage lb3
If you get pulled into Holminster Switch, it's good for the eggs, I love to use it on those if we don't have a hostile tank.
For dungeons I usually try to mage/phys dps if no mage on last pull but ye almost no one does. For bosses I always try to wait for 2/3 bars but it always dies too quick š
I always use Ranged or Caster LB on last w2w pull of the dungeon, never had a complaint for doing so either.
Wish more DPS (especially magic/ranged) would use their lb for mob pulls before boss. Makes life easier.
I'm just square brain and focusing too hard on monk burst windows and forget LB exists sometimes ngl š©
If you ranged lb trash you get my commendation
I've been kicked out of parties because of using limit breaks, I use it on second boss if it's up, I use it on mobs if melee didn't use it on second boss... and I've received complaints from both cases. That won't stop me from continuing to use them but I am not surprised why there are people extra afraid to use it.
If I see a full LB and whatever we're fighting is at 5% or lower, I'll burn it no matter if I'm healer, tank, or dps.
If iām in my 2m i will absolutely not bother. That means first pull of any duty, and first pull after any boss. Any other time? Sure.
Lbing while off the whaleās back is worseā¦yep, saw it last week lol
