5 Lifehacks to Avoiding Work Burnout

Unless you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you have to work to earn a living and survive. Some are lucky enough to be doing their dream jobs – lucky to be doing what they are actually most passionate about. Others though would have to put up with a career that their college degree, experience or skills led them to. This can be a source of burnout.


Then again, there are other reasons why we come to a point where we become too fed up with work. These can include lack of motivation, repetitiveness, health problems and the like. Although burnout is common and is sometimes inevitable, it’s something that we have to avoid as it can affect our productivity as well as our health.


Here are some useful tips you can follow:


  1. Get to the bottom of the situation.

The very first step towards preventing or eliminating burnout is to identify what the problem really is. Are you not happy with your current salary anymore? Do you find your job repetitive and boring? Do you not find any satisfaction in what you do? Are there conflicts that may be hindering you from reaching your true potential? Getting to the root of the problem will help you deal with the situation more effectively.


  1. Strive to improve yourself.

Sometimes, the one thing that burn us out is our lack of faith in our abilities and talents. If you feel that you are not cut out for the job, don’t quit just yet. Improve yourself first. You can enroll in various self-development lessons or in courses that will hone your knowledge and skills. That way, you’ll have more confidence to tackle any challenge, be it at work or your personal life.


  1. Look for creative outlets.

You are not able to perform well, think clearly or accurately, become flexible and be creative when you experience burnout. Even if you use the creative side of your brain at work, looking for creative outlets keeps you motivated, engaged and well informed. If you’re a graphic designer, for example, you can create other stuff that lets you run your imaginations wild during your free time. If you’re a writer, on the other hand, you might want to try your hand at poem writing, blogging or other things that let you explore other sides of your profession.


  1. Learn to take a breather.

Lower stress levels by taking a break from your work email, mobile phone and other gadgets whenever you have free time. This is according to a study done by the University of California in Irvine. This will also help improve focus and increase productivity.


  1. Take care of your health and overall wellness.

Oftentimes, burnout is a cause of imbalance in your system. When you are usually sleep-deprived, stuffed with unhealthy food and inactive for quite some time, you may feel lethargic, de-motivated and useless. This is why you need to look for health and wellness programs to help you become stronger and less prone to stress.
