Minimum Wage Workers Get Salary Increase

Date Posted: May 12, 2011

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced additional P22.00 in the daily cost-of-living allowance (COLA) for the minimum wage employees in Metro Manila.

From the P4040 minimum salary, the additional P22 will increase it to P426.00. However, DOLE wants to clarify that the P22 is just an allowance and is not an increase in the basic salary of an employee. It will not be used in computing night differentials, retirement and separation benefits, and the 13th month pay. The COLA usually serves as an immediate relief.

Some sectors and employees are not happy with the P22 as Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) had asked for a P75 wage hike amid rising prices of goods and services.

On the other hand, the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) had warned that a P75 wage hike could lead to layoffs and business closures.

Salary increase in other regions are now being tackled and soon to be implemeneted.
