Philips Inc. Plans Expansion in RP

Date Posted: Jun 27, 2010

One of world’s leading multinational firms Philips Electronics and Lighting Inc. will bat for the Philippines as good investment destination in case its Dutch headquarters decide to relocate some of its operations from the increasingly expensive China.

“We are trying to fight to expand that business from Zhenzhen,” said Philips’ local unit chief executive officer Rico Gonzales during the 1st Philippine Energy Forum 2010.

According to Gonzales the cost of labor in China is becoming very expensive, “So there is a reason to move to this country.”

Gonzales said that should this happen, this would support its bid to expand Philips economic footprint in the Philippines.

The Respironics is a big business of Philips and the market is focused in the US and Europe.

Another way to expand its business in the country is through its call center in Libis, Quezon City, which is currently serving Philips’ customers in the English-speaking countries in Asia.

He said it is not impossible for the Philippines to be one-day handling Philips global Customer Service operations.

At present, Philips is enjoying brisk sales of its CFL lighting products as more households have realized the benefits of lower energy consumption from using the traditional lighting or the incandescent bulbs. The use of CFL and LED lighting can reduce energy consumption by as much as 80 percent.
