10 Job Hunting Myths that You Should Ignore

There are a lot of misconceptions about job hunting and about the employers itself. Most of this misconception leads to a myth among all jobseekers. These myths were mainly created by some jobseekers who suffered disappointments of not getting the job and start saying negative things which they passed on to the others and so forth.

Here is some job hunting myths that jobseekers must let go:

  1. Companies prefer applicants from top universities- Although graduates from top schools are highly regarded by most companies it does not necessarily mean that these companies will automatically hire them. Most companies hire applicants based on their experience, characteristics and skills and not their educational background.

  1. All employers are the same- This is probably the most common phrase that you will hear in an applicant. No, employers have different standards on hiring an employee. They have different strategies and styles. This phrase was only invented by some applicants who have suffered disappointments from multiple interview failures.

  1. Information written in resume is not important- This is the most common mistakes of jobseekers. Some jobseekers take resume for granted thinking that you can deliver yourself more on vernal interview. What you write in your resume, fonts, styles, and how you present it is as important as other interview process. Employers or interviewers will definitely read what’s inside your resume. Every detail that they should know must be written there. Remember that what you write in your resume will be part of the basis why employer should hire you.

  1. Companies hire experienced applicants over fresh graduates- This is not applicable in out time anymore except if the position is a senior or managerial position which really requires experience. Employers now give exception to fresh graduates over experienced applicants the hiring method will be based on the skills and knowledge of both.

  1. Dressing in appropriate attire is an old rule- In any job interviews, interviewers add points to applicants who make an effort to be in appropriate attire. Presentation is very important to all interviewers because it represents your personality and attitude.

  1. Employers prefer good-looking applicants- Yes, having good looks is a plus factor but it does not necessarily mean that applicants who does not possess good looks most likely failed in interviews. The way you carry yourself, the way you speak and your qualifications is what interviewer gives credits for.

  1. Showing off your flaws is a major disaster- Well, not all “mistakes” can be a disaster depends on how heavy your mistake is. Addressing your weakness is not a bad move for most employers for it just shows how confident you are in addressing the qualities that you are lacking and how eager you are to change it or improve it on a positive way.

  1. Cover letters and Portfolio are not important anymore- This is absolutely ridiculous. Cover letters and portfolios are still important since its part of presentation and it shows your skills. Cover letters are applicable to all jobseekers while portfolios are very important interview materials for applicants who are applying for writing and creative positions.

  1. “We’ll just call you if you’re qualified” is a phrase referring to “I’m sorry you are not qualified.”- Do not be discouraged by this phrase easily because some interviewers really call qualified applicants when employers have to decide who to hire. Sometime, this phrase is used if the company gets a lot of good applicants but the vacancy is just 1 or 2.

  1. Applicants who have friends or relatives in the company most likely get the job- Applicants who were referred or have backers inside the company does not mean that they will get the job over those does not have. Most employers do not accept applicants just because they were referred, what they are more after is to hire the most qualified applicants.

Myths are just guides. Although we can say that those above myths happen in some companies, it does not necessarily mean that it happen all the time. An applicant who has a positive thinking and possess the best qualities that employers look for most likely get the job over people who has negative thinking and feel discouraged over the negative myths.
