At least 1,000 workers of Philippine National Construction Corporation (PNCC) will be receiving a gloomy Christmas present as they were facing possible lay-offs.
The PNCC is a government-owned corporation who are facing problem after Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) executive director Manuel Imperial issued an order yesterday to PNCC giving them until 2:00 pm to turn over management and operations of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to Manila Toll Expressway System Inc. (MATES).
MATES is owned by Malaysian toll Operator MTD Capital Bhd.
However, the Pasig Regional Trial Court Branch 268 Judge Amelia Manalastas granted a three-day temporary restraining order preventing MATES from taking PNCC operation and management.
Manalastas said there was an “extreme urgency” to issue a restraining order to “prevent a violent confrontation between the people of PNCC and Mates, unnecessary loss of revenues, sudden displacement of employees and the confusion and massive traffic” which could arise from the abrupt takeover of the expressway’s operations.
The discussion about the turn-over of operation of PNCC to MATES is still on going leaving “laid off” employees in between.
