PAGASA To Recruit Fresh Graduates

Date Posted: Nov 16, 2009

One of the problems seen in the sometime-slow response of weather forecasting in the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is the lack of younger staffs.

Senior forecasters in PAGASA are worried that they may run out of staffs since most of their personnel are in the senior age and are likely to retire soon.

With these, Acting Deputy Administrator and Administration and Engineering Catalino Davis said that they will recruit fresh graduates and young professionals.

“About 40 percent of the 900 PAGASA personnel are comprised of 41-50 years old specialist, who re nearing retirement age while experts with ages from 31-40 years old compose almost 39 percent,” Davis said.

The young professionals who will get hired will undergo a comprehensive training to become a weather and climate specialist.

However, Davis noted that the new hires will make up only 13.5 percent or 13 of PAGASA’s entire workforce.
