Growth of Banana Export Industry Create More Jobs

A banana producer and exporter firm La Frutera, Inc sets to expand operations this year to cater the increasing demand for the high-value crop abroad.

La Frutera, Inc president Senen Bacani says they would build additional plantation, and expand its 1,000 hectare plantation by 50 to 100 hectares more in the second half quarter of the year.

Bacani said, "As we generate more cash, we can have additional planting."

The firm exports bananas to different countries in the Middle East and neighboring Asian countries. About 60% of its five million boxes of Cavendish banana were exported to , , the , Iran Japan, and .

"We export everything that we produce," he said, adding that La Frutera records $14 million to $15 million in sales every year.

La Fruitera currently employs more than 1,800 workers and is expected to hire more manpower to support the firm’s expansion.

With the additional plantations, the company might increase revenues by a tenth, Mr. Bacani said.

A data from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) shows that banana export increased by 6.7% from 503,198 metric tons (MT) or $93.414 million last year to 537,095 MT or $101.267 million this year.
