Legal Holidays in the Philippines for 2010

This early, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) already signed Proclamation 1841 declaring the 10 regular holidays, four non-working holidays and a special holiday for 2010. The signing was done last July 21, 2009.

According to executive secretary Eduardo Ermita, the early proclamation would benefit businessmen, who were conscious about the impact of holidays on workers’ productivity and even to students.

Ermita said, "This isn't just a matter of the Office of the President declaring a holiday as working or non-working. There is a peso sign attached to it.”

“That's why it's necessary that we declare early because this is what the foreign chamber is looking forward to so they can program their businesses,'' he added, citing that companies lose as much as Php 8 million during non working holidays.

The Regular holidays for 2010 are:

·         New Years Day (January 1)

·         Maundy Thursday (April 1)

·         Good Friday (April 2)

·         Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9)

·         Labor Day (May 1)

·         Independence Day (June 12, moved to June 14 Monday)

·         National Heroes Day (August 30)

·         Bonifacio Day (November 30, moved to November 29 Monday)

·         Christmas Day (December 25)

·         Rizal Day (December 30, moved to December 27 Monday)

Non Working Holidays:

·         Ninoy Aquino Day (August 23)

·         All Saints Day (November 01)

·         December 24 and December 31

Arroyo during the proclamation said, "In order to foster closer family ties and enable our countrymen to observe Christmas more meaningful, it is but fitting to declare December 24 as an additional special (non-working) day throughout the day.''

Holidays except those that are religious in nature are moved to the nearest Mondays based on the signed Republic Act 9292.

Other holidays are the 1986 People Power Revolution anniversary (February 25) which will be moved to February 22 Monday (for all schools only) and the Eid'l Fitr and Eid'l Adha (date will be based on the lunar calendar of the Muslims).

Pres. Arroyo also signed the Republic Act 9465 which declares July 27 a special national “working holiday” in recognition of the founding anniversary of Iglesia Ni Cristo.
