How to Avoid Job Mismatch

Date Posted: May 27, 2009

Is the position that you are applying ‘really’ fits your skills?

Ask the question above to yourself before you start preparing your resumes and pass it to different employers.

As you ask yourself if it really fits your skills, ask again “Is it really worth to try?”

Job mismatch happens when an applicant try to apply in an industry that is far from his/her capacity or skills. It is also one of the major causes of unemployment, based on the latest survey conducted by the government.

To avoid having job mismatch, follow the advice bellow:

  • Apply according to your skills and capacity
  • Do not focus on the most in demand job especially if that job is not your thing.
  • Study the job offer well before you sign a contract.
  • Do not look on how big the company is but on how you can perform your job.
  • Apply on a position where you can learn and grow as a person
  • If you are a member of a job portal website, match your preferred industry according to the degree that you finished and your qualification

Best Example of Job Mismatch

One of the best and common examples of job mismatch is applicants who are hoping to land a job at the call center industry but have poor skills in customer service and in using English command.

Fresh graduates often rush and apply to BPO Companies in willingness to try to be a call center agent even if their skills are not qualified. Instead of applying for the position that is in line with their course in college, they all hover to call center due to the salaries and benefits they offer- but end up rejected because they are not qualified.

It is very important that the job is match according to your skills, just like love, if you and your partner blend well; most likely you two will have a lasting relationship. In these times that stable jobs are very rarely to find, make sure that you land a close-to-perfect job where you can give all your best to make a lasting career.
